The Exploratory Wine Research Mission aims to approximate researchers from Swiss universities to the Argentinian and Brazilian science and innovation landscape.
It is an opportunity to visit production sites, attend events, meet potential research partners, and get to know the local environment with the support of the Leading House for the Latin American Region in partnership with Swissnex in Brazil.
The call is designed for researchers who plan to or already develop bilateral collaboration with Latin American universities, working on wine-related topics, and who want to create a network of contacts for future research projects.
The aim of the Early Career Grants is to encourage researchers from Swiss institutions to advance their careers with a research stay and fieldwork in Latin America. Early Career Grants are particularly useful for young researchers (PhD students and postdocs) to integrate the next generation of scientists into international collaboration.
For proposals up to CHF 7,000
Deadline for applications: January 31, 2023
This two-day event provided a transdisciplinary space to study and analyze the dynamics of science and technology between Switzerland and the Latin American region. With experts from life sciences, engineering, mathematics, arts, humanities and business, the Science & Innovation Summit offered multidisciplinary research lectures, panel discussions and a World Café to address the region's most pressing issues. Topics covered during these two days included: STEM, business and the environment, academic diaspora and migration, startups and new technologies, sustainability, social innovation, smart cities, circular economy and clean energy, and innovation and the benefits of visual arts in medicine.
The Leading House Network also presented the current state of the art and funding instruments and introduced Swiss policies and institutions collaborating with Latin American researchers. On the first day of the event, panelists emphasized that science and innovation have contributed significantly to improving our standard of living over the last 50 to 100 years. Progress will continue vigorously in the future, especially in medical, digital and environmental technologies. However, for inventions to become innovations, they need to be supported by important economic means and appropriate policies to bring them to the market through industrial production. There is a good potential for collaboration between Swiss science institutes and their Latin American counterparts.
The second day of the event was very case and topic oriented. Speakers highlighted several promising projects in Latin America as well as the key role of investors and companies in bringing inventions to market. Significant socio-economic and financial challenges were identified to move projects forward. It was found that collaboration with all stakeholders is crucial. Overall, this Science and Innovation Summit was a great opportunity for the Swiss and Latin American beneficiaries. The event not only provided an overview of small and larger initiatives, but also opened up interesting contacts and personal conversations with established and emerging Swiss and Latin American scientists. This event was the first of two Science & Innovation Summits planned by the Leading House for the Latin America region at the University of St. Gallen. The next Science & Innovation Summit will take place in 2024.
